Superyacht sales for 2020 have broken records. With stronger than expected sales in the fourth quarter, it proved to be the best performing quarter ever recorded, according to our intelligence platform which gathers real-time information from around the world. Not only did 2020 has the strongest quarter but December 2020, in particular, was also the strongest month ever for superyacht sales. In the Summer of 2020, many governments temporarily loosened travel restrictions which gave brokers the opportunity to travel and bring clients to yachts for inspections. The lockdown seems to have driven demand for yachts, as clients were more desperate than ever to get away on sea. These meetings culminated in a higher-than-expected number of sales from September onwards. “It is encouraging news for the sector,” says Tim Johnson, CEO of TJB Super Yachts, who admitted he had had a few sleepless nights at the beginning of 2020. “We are remaining very positive as many of the best yachts have already been booked to charter, in the anticipation of being able to travel in the summer. We are also already in negotiations for a number of yacht sales, so we are asking clients who are considering buying, to have those discussions now as many owners may start to reconsider selling so they can enjoy their own boat after being in lockdown on land themselves”.
