A European-funded programme has been launched, involving Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) with the intention of developing a new yacht-cruising route along Scotland’s west coast, the “Cool Route”.

This new strategy aims to encourage superyacht enthusiasts to be attracted to the area, as one of the most beautiful cruising destinations in the world. This would in turn assist remote, local businesses in the area and bring tourism to the region.

A brochure invitation has been sent out to target the superyacht industry as well as encouraging small businesses to register their services on a custom-built online platform. This links into ports and provides information on attractions, amenities and other information on the local areas.

In its infancy, the aim is to really promote the “Cool Route” by providing information on what there is to see and do in the area. Communicating primarily with marine operators is crucial in making sure that relevant information is provided and passed on to any superyacht cruisers who may be unaware of what the Scottish west coast has to offer.

The Cool Route boasts being one of the most beautiful sailing routes in the world. Stretching from Southern and Western Ireland, across to Northern Ireland, Western Scotland then onto the Faroe Islands and Norway, with over 300 stopovers pinpointed across the route.

The project has been led by Cork Institute of Technology and funded by the Northern Periphery and Arctic Programme, costing £1.1 million.
