It’s the final date on the Formula One Grand Prix calendar, the race which brings to a close 2019’s season of drama, high energy, fierce battles and superb driving. And Abu Dhabi isn’t chosen as the final climax to this year’s legendary competition for nothing. For no other race can turn on the entertainment, the theatre or the suspense quite like this one.

On Saturday 30^th November a weekend of spectacles begins with the qualifying races, each driver and team pushing the boundaries – and their cars – to snare a better position by a hare’s breadth of a second. With two more races before Abu Dhabi, Mercedes already looks set to take the constructor’s crown, with Hamilton and Bottas currently in first and second place in the driver’s championship. But in Formula One anything can change, and the battles are far from decided yet.

The Race

This year the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix will celebrate 10 years in the glittering world of Formula One, and they have certainly made their mark during that time. The man-made, $40 billion Yas Island was built around the racetrack at its heart, the 5.5 kilometre Yas Marina Circuit weaving between seven hotels, Ferrari’s indoor theme park, a mall, water park, golf course, and concert arena. For 55 laps drivers navigate some of the season’s most nail-biting corners and straights on the Hermann Tilke-designed track. Most notable is the 1.2 kilometre straight between Turns 7 and 8 where some astounding over-taking manoeuvres unfold. And to make it all yet more dramatic, the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is the first ever race to be held at night. With a 5pm start time, night descends around the track during the course of the race, ramping up the energy and finishing with an explosion of fireworks and world class entertainment.
