There is no getting around the fact that superyachts use a lot of fuel and energy. Environmentally, despite rapidly developing technologies, they leave an impact, and this impact is one that the industry is keen to minimise. Creating greener superyachts has been at the forefront of development in an industry who prides itself on staying at the peak of innovation, and with it, we’re already seeing huge strides in lowering greenhouse emissions and protecting our oceans.

Hydrogen-powered superyachts, whether hybrid or fully powered, cut carbon emissions drastically, and builders are experimenting with zero-fossil-fuel propulsion—from full solar to kite sails to converters that create instant, renewable electric power. There is no doubt that the superyacht industry is becoming a major global eco-player, but while reducing the amount of carbon that a superyacht uses is the first priority, TJB Super Yachts strongly believe that off-setting the rest is fundamental to reach an environmental equilibrium.

YACHT CARBON OFFSETTING

So what do we mean by carbon offsetting? In essence, it offers charterers a chance to counterbalance the Greenhouse Gases (GHG) emitted by a yacht’s activity. That could be anything from the fuel used by the yacht and its tenders and water toys, to fuel used in helicopters and private jets, and even crew and guest-related flights and land travel.

Carbon offsetting calculates the tonnes of GHG emissions and ensures that tonne for tonne, they are replaced into suitable green energy projects. The concept is simple, a like-for-like balancing of the carbon emissions, allowing yacht owners, charter guests and those who work in the industry to ensure they are contributing positively towards the preservation of our environment.

TJB Super Yachts Team up with Yacht Carbon Offset

In order to offer our clients this invaluable and conscience-easing opportunity, TJB Super Yachts have teamed up with the industry-leading Yacht Carbon Offset. Their ethos and methodology are transparent: while they first advocate taking action to lower consumption, reduce travel and improve efficiency, their projects step in to offset those greenhouse gas emissions which are unavoidable. Whether a charterer or owner wishes to offset some or all of their GHG emissions is up to them, and carbon credits will be calculated which are then poured into relevant green energy projects.

Funding Renewable Energy Power Projects

Yacht Carbon Offset works alongside a carefully selected range of renewable energy power projects all over the world. From solar to wind, hydro and geothermal technologies, they each have an immediate and positive impact on the environment. A vast solar farm in Namibia is part of a plan to allow the country to generate its own power, rather than import its energy from South Africa – currently 60% of which comes from fossil-fuelled power plants.

In Chile, a successful run-of-river hydroelectric power scheme has been drastically reducing the country’s reliance on fossil fuels, while in Aruba, an island which generates high quantities of carbon due to its need to desalinate water, wind turbines have been producing carbon savings of 150,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent.

Marine projects too, are being funded through the carbon offsetting system, with projects underway in coastal and marine ecosystems, such as mangroves, tidal marshes and seagrasses, whose ability to store carbon far exceeds those of terrestrial forests. While these ‘blue carbon’ projects are still being developed, an ambitious project in Kenya’s vast mangroves is the tip of the iceberg when it comes to this kind of environmental project.

Acknowledge and Act for a Greener Superyacht Industry

It is one thing to be aware of the impact superyachts have on the environment, and another to act. TJB Super Yachts have decided to take that step and act to reduce the impact the industry has on our environment. And we invite our clients to join us. Together we can make a difference, not just through carbon offsetting, but through our choices and positive practices. With this tailored and bespoke service, you can choose how much you wish to offset and find out more about the exact projects your actions are helping to fund. To learn more about making your next superyacht charter a greener experience, please don’t hesitate to get in touch and together we can really make a difference.
